چکیده

We demonstrate that an estimate of the point-to-point seismic propagation Green Functions can be extracted from microseisms. These estimated Green’s function, obtained from 30 days of continuous seismic data from 151 seismic stations in Southern California, are used to extract the group velocity of surface waves between all station pairs in the network. The seismic data were then used in a simple, but densely sampled tomographic procedure to estimate the surface wave velocity structure within the frequency range of 0.10.2 Hz for a region in Southern California. The result compares favorably with previous estimates obtained using more conventional and elaborate inversion procedures. This demonstrates that coherent noise field between station pairs can be used for seismic imaging purposes.

Exploiting the Spatio-Temporal Coherence of Ocean Ambient Noise for Passive Tomography

Extracting the coherent component of the ambient noise field propagating between a pair of passive receivers provides a means for passive acoustic sensing of the ocean environment. For instance, the arrival-times structure of the ambient noise cross-correlation time-function between a pair of receivers can yield an estimate of the arrival structure (or wavefronts) of the actual time-domain Gree...

13: Exploiting the Spatio-Temporal Coherence of Ocean Ambient Noise for Passive Tomography

Coherent processing of ambient noise, based on these computed noise cross-correlation between receivers, has been suggested as a potential means for developing passive methods for ocean acoustic tomography or thermometry [Roux et al., 2004]. However, this technique can require long recording times to extract stable coherent arrivals from ocean noise correlations [Sabra et al., 2005a; Godin, 201...

Head waves in ocean acoustic ambient noise: Measurements and modeling.

Seismic interferometry recovers the Green's function between two receivers by cross-correlating the field measured from sources that surround the receivers. In the seismic literature, it has been widely reported that this processing can produce artifacts in the Green's function estimate called "spurious multiples" or the "virtual refracted wave." The spurious multiples are attributed to the hea...

Passive Estimation of the Ocean Seismoacoustic Environment by Extracting the Green’s Function from Ambient Noise

In the ocean, the dominant seismoacoustic noise source mechanism varies greatly across frequencies from ocean wave generated microseisms (0.05Hz-0.2Hz) to sea-surface noise (above 1kHz), including noise generated by human or biological activities. Though incoherent imaging with ocean ambient noise has been demonstrated (e.g. daylight imaging), a goal of this research is to use ambient noise, an...
